Sedation dental treatment: the key to beating dental anxiety

Sedation dental treatment has helped scores of nervous patients back to full oral health. At Dental Beauty Bedfont in West London, our principal dentist, Dr Ricky Adams, is Dental Phobia certified, and is highly experienced in treating people who suffer from fear or phobia when it comes to dentistry.

sedation-dentalFear of the dentist is not uncommon: it affects approximately one in ten adults in the UK to the point where they simply don’t go to appointments, instead waiting until an emergency occurs to seek out treatment. This can become a self-fulfilling prophecy, as emergencies often result in pain and the need for more invasive or extensive procedures, all of which could have been avoided with regular check-ups and early intervention.

At our West London clinic, sedation dental treatment is just one of the options we offer to nervous patients. We also have the services of a fully-qualified hypnotist, who can furnish you with techniques to help you avoid any fear in the future.

Sedation dental treatment involves the use of sedative drugs to induce a deeply relaxed and peaceful state. You will not be asleep as you would be with a general anaesthetic, which means you can cooperate with your dentist’s instructions as needed. But you will be largely unaware of your treatment and may remember very little about it when it is complete. Most importantly of all, you will experience no pain.

Our West London practice offers two forms of sedation dental care: oral sedation and intravenous sedation.

Oral sedation dental treatment is an excellent option if, like many people, needles are a trigger for your anxiety. You will be prescribed sedative tablets, with full instructions on aftercare requirements. It is now illegal to drive under the influence of sedatives, so you will need to bring a friend to your West London sedation dental appointment.

Intravenous sedation dental treatment is delivered by a small needle and takes effect almost instantly, because the sedatives go directly into your bloodstream. We have special sedationists at our West London clinic who are qualified to provide this stronger form of sedation. Again, a friend will need to drive you home.
